So often, we lump God’s attempts to speak to us into a category of unwanted, inconvenient, or annoying demands that make us uncomfortable and threaten our control over our lives. But hearing from God isn’t just about doing something for him or helping others – hearing from God is good for you. In the book of Acts, Philip shows us an example of doing God’s work simply by listening; God did all the work to put Philip in a situation where he could do His will. God gave him the command to “rise and go” – so Philip rose and went. After listening and obeying, Philip is simply taken over by who God made him to be, and finds himself in a situation he is perfectly equipped for.
